Dorsal Finn high School was built in 1890 by renowned architect Christian Scuttle. With its red brick and modestly heated class rooms, the school is the epitome of the Victorian era in which it was constructed.
Its first headmaster was Bartholomew Thwack. Mr Thwack presided over the school for over half a century. It is alleged that - upon his death in 1942 – his remains were buried in secret beneath the head masters office. However a headstone can be found in the town cemetery inscribed with the words:
Here Lies Bartholomew Thwack
Headmaster of Dorsal
Honest!
This has not completely dispelled the myths of the headmaster keeping watch over the school, and all who walk through its close knit corridors. At night it is said that the spirit of the long dead school master roams freely, ever present and ever in charge. If a book falls unexpectedly to the floor during a particularly unruly geography lesson or a classroom door is caught and slammed shut by a gust of wind, pupils can often be heard to whisper ‘Thwack’s back,’ in total awe.
The current school master is Ms Helen Hall. But more about her in Beatrice Beecham's Fete of Fate.
